Slacker Chic of the Week: Nong Toom

Photobucket
In honor of the Olympics, but in keeping with the stylishness of Slacker Chic, I thought we'd honor an athelete that is fierce, fabulous, gorgeous, kick ass, and an inspiration to anyone who's ever been told they couldn't or shouldn't do something, or would have to change who they are to succeed. Nong Toom is arguably one of the hottest women in the world of boxing, but that wasn't always so. You see, Nong was originally born a dude. Although Nong may have struggled with the difficulties that come along with being transgender, one thing she has never struggled with are her opponents in the boxing ring. As Thailand's top Muay Thai boxer, she beat down everyone who ever stepped in the ring with her, thus gradually gaining the respect from the people of Thailand that she had long deserved. In fact, her signature move had nothing to do with violence, but came at the end of a match when she would kiss her bloody opponent-her way of saying "Sorry I whooped your ass!" Although it may have taken the public a while to warm up to the notion of a kathoey (translation "lady dude") duking it out, one person whom Nong did not have to worrying about accepting her was her mother who said she loved and cherished Nong for who she was, and if there was anything she was less than accepting of, it was seeing her precious baby in the tough world of Muay Thai! Since having her sex change surgery in 1999, she has continued to flourish in her sport, kicking ass across the board. But there is also a softer side to Nong-that of being a mother to her daughter whom she adopted when the child was just three days old. Nong is no doubt an inspiration not just to those struggling with their sexuality, but to anyone who feels they must change who they are to be accepted. And I would be remiss without giving Nong's mother credit for loving her child just the way she is, and giving her what any parent should-a loving, supportive relationship. Viva la Toom!
