"Tropic Thunder" Premiere

Photobucket
The "Tropic Thunder" premiere was last night with the cast looking in very high spirits. Although the film has gotten positive reviews all over the board, some people are not happy with some of the movie's material. Various groups disabilities groups are calling for a boycott nationwide because, among other things, Jack Black speaks in farts and the word "retard" is used on several occassions. This, they say, is blatantly making fun of those with mental disabilities and advocating "hate speech". "Some people have taken this as making fun of handicapped people, but we're really trying to make fun of the actors who use this material as fodder for acclaim," co-writer Etan Cohen echoed to MTV. "The last thing you want is for people to think you're making fun of the victims in this who are having their lives turned into fodder for people to win Oscars." In addition, DreamWorks spokesperson Chip Sullivan says, "The film is in no way meant to disparage or harm the image of individuals with disabilities. We have had productive discussions with representatives of disability-advocacy organizations and look forward to working with them closely in the future. However, no changes or cuts to the film will be made." I don't know about you, but I'm going to see this movie. And I honestly would not have thought that someone talking in farts was making fun of the disabled. I don't like to speak for everyone, but I don't think the whole world thinks like that-in terms of assuming someone is mentally disabled just because they act stupid.

I personally think it's a little distasteful to have RDJ in blackface portraying an African-American man. I know it's a comedy, but it's still a bit unsettling.
