Slacker Chic of the Week: Kim Gordon

Photobucket
Only two words are worthy enough to even begin describing the awesomeness that is Kim Gordon: The Originator. I don't care what anyone says-Kim is the Mother of Punk Rock. Ok, maybe no the mother in the way that she'll ground you for sneaking in the window of your bedroom at 2 in the morning. She's more like the cool aunt that tells you about all the bands she saw when she was your age and all the crazy shit she did. That's not to say that Kim does not have the mother instict. In fact, she has a daughter herself with fellow Sonic Youth member and husband of 25 years Thurston Moore. And in order to inspire other moms to bring out their inner coolness, La Gordon launched a limited clothing line Mirror/Dash stating that "there's a need for clothes for cool moms."
Not only has she been igniting the fire of fellow mothers for decades, but she's been igniting the careers of some of punk's most celebrated underground acts such as The Breeders, Lydia Lunch, Bikini Kill and even Hole. In her spare time, Kim expresses herself through yet another artistic medium-painting. She's put out several successful books, and her work has been shown in some of the most prestigious art galleries from here to Japan. Oh, and if you think Kim is just another artist-wannabe with zero experience, think again. She is in fact a graduate of the Otis College of Art & Design in L.A.
Bassist, singer, artist, mother, wife, producer, designer-Kim does it all. You don't have to be a total child of the 90's like I am to appreciate the influence she has had on the world of music and art. I think that she is a very strong influence on women, because she shows us that you do not have to give up your sense of self and the things that you love once you become a mother and a wife. She's also a testament to the fact that you can be respected in a male dominated industry without trying to take on male characteristics. And on a personal level, her relationship with Thurston Moore shows that women can have love with a man who respects them, values them, and really roots for them to succeed in their own element. Kim is herself, and damn good at it. And for all these reasons and more, she is the very definition of Slacker Chic.
